QuickTime Alternative - put Apple's bloatware on a diet

review from ClifNotes, updated Jun 2007, Multimedia Players

Jun 2007
I recently tried to watch a QuickTime movie online and I was prompted to install a newer version of QuickTime ... NO! I won't do it.

Years ago I tried QT and I was not pleased with how it tried to take over all of the video and audio formats. I'm not one to hold a grudge, but I've never tried it since then.

Since many movie trailers and other types of online movies are in MOV or other QT formats, how do I manage to get by without it? I get by very nicely with QuickTime Alternative.

QuickTime Alternative (QTA) is usually found at Free-Codecs.com, but the folks at Apple requested that they stop hosting it.

Quote from Free-Codecs.com

Download links to QuickTime Alternative have been removed at kind request of Apple. Even though this site does not host any downloads, we have have decided to just remove all links, even indirect ones, and get on with life. QT is a slow and sometimes also buggy piece of software anyway.

This has spawned a number of changes at the Free-Codecs website and at one time they weren't even posting links to it. Today when I checked the links were back.

I'm not sure how much longer the good people behind QTA will continue to provide updates, so I recommend that you go out now and get the latest one. (Currently v1.81)

If you somehow find you can't get QTA anymore, the KliteCodecs will work just as well for viewing most QT formats.

Passion Audio Player - audio that gives you chills

review from BillAllin, Jan 2006 - updated Jul 2007, permalink Multimedia Players

Notes from Bill Allin
Though many freeware programs will play MP3s and other audio formats, only Passion Audio Player gives me chills of excitement when I listen to favourite tunes on my computer. In addition to the commonly included features of pitch, tempo and samplerate variations, playlist assembly, shuffle, streaming audio and so on, it has a preamp (with ON/OFF switch) and ten equalizer slides that cover an unusually wide range (which adds richness to the sound) and may be set on Auto. With so many features it includes and formats it accommodates (through BASS API 2.2), it's best to direct you to the web site.

NOTE: The latest version is 2.3, but some freeware sites still have the older v2.2 if you search for download sites. Version 2.3 is so complete that the author doesn't even have a plan for what else he could add in a future version. I can understand why.

Update from Clif: Abdullah in Turkey wrote in to let me know that Passion Audio Player is now at version 2.4. I guess the author found a few things to add.

ClearProg - clearing your tracks

review from Mindblower, Jul 2007, permalink Browser Tools

From Mindblower:

Hi Clif. Hope you had a great vacation. Thought I'd share this gem with those interested in keeping their computer safe from prying eyes (clearing their tracks). It's called ClearProg (available at http://www.clearprog.de/downloads.php?lang=en ) and I recommend the Beta versions, since they are bulletproof.

Besides the ability to work with different browsers like Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape/Mozilla.Firefox, one can clear plugins from MS Office, Multimedia, and over 200 others listed below. The program is easy to use, fully user friendly (where you select what you want erased) and so on. Highly recommended, Mindblower!

the program deletes the surftracks of the browser:
- supported browsers: Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox and Opera
- cookies (with exclusion possibility)
- history
- temporary internet files (cache)
- the registered URLs
- autocompleting entries in webforms
- download lists of the Netscape/Opera

further the among other things following things can be deleted:
- recycle
- document files in the starting menu
- windows temp files
- execute entries in the startmenu
- file lists of ms Office programs
- file lists of the Windows Media Player and the RealPlayer
- own files with filter (can be selected)
- plugIn-function for independent inserting of erasing processes

Internet Window Washer - erase your surfing histories

review from Jimbo, Jul 2007, permalink Browser Tools

From Jimbo:

I have been using 'Internet Window Washer' for over 2 years, it just keeps getting better and better.

It is a FREE internet tracks eraser and privacy cleaner. It is definitely FREEWARE but does install with an overlay nag screen (asking for a small donation). This will quickly disappear, however with a simple click on the 'skip' button at the bottom of the screen to reveal FIWW's simple and easy to use interface.

FIWW can be downloaded from Eusing's home page or from most popular freeware sites (e.g. cnet download.com).
The execute file is only 887k.b. and it supports Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista.

It is a very easy, trouble free install and comes with it's own uninstaller and help files.
The interface is completely self explanatory and very easy to use. Just click on 'wash settings', select the files you wish to clean and then click 'wash now'.

It has settings for the popular browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera and Firefox) and for I.M. software as well as a long list of supported subsidiary titles. You can even add a specific title using the 'custom item' option.

Under the 'options' tag you can choose to overwrite the cleaned files between one and ten times and set the scheduler for auto cleaning. It also has a simple start-up manager (under 'tools').

A word of warning! - be careful what files you select for cleaning. e.g. in the Outlook Express section are options for cleaning your folders, including the in-box. This program really works, if you keep wanted emails in Outlook Express folders do not clean them or they will be lost forever!

This is a terrific piece of software and comparisons will obviously be made with the very good free 'CCleaner'. My opinion, for what it is worth, is that FIWW is at least as good as CCleaner and for Netscape and/or Opera users an absolute must have.

FOOTNOTE: I have read a couple of user reviews recently, bemoaning the use of a so called nag screen in freeware. One fellow even suggested that it wasn't freeware at all but should be labeled 'nagware'. I found that attitude very difficult to comprehend. Free software costs a lot of money to produce and maintain, if we want to continue reaping the benefits of freeware titles we should be supporting the publishers and their software not bagging them!

Quote from the website
Free Internet Window Washer is a free internet tracks eraser and privacy cleaner software. As you work on your computer and browse the Internet, you leave behind traces of your activity. The Windows built-in functions will not protect you, most of the tracks can not be erased with them. Therefore, anyone else can see what you have been doing on your computer. Furthermore, much of your activity information takes up valuable disk space, and recovering this space can be very beneficial.

A-Squared Anti-Dialer - gives bad dialers the busy signal

tip from ClifNotes, Sept 2006 - Updated Jul 2007, permalink Dial-up Networking Tools

Update: This is now at version 3.0

I recently received an email from Emsisoft, who are security software specialists. They have a new freeware product out for home users only. It's called a-squared Anti-Dialer.

I don't use a telephone to connect to the internet anymore, but I've heard that over 20% of the people on the net use a dial-up connection. I felt it might be a good idea to pass this on, because there are many ways you could get infected with a malicious dialer. I haven't tried this program, but I trust the company. I've used a couple of their free programs in the past and they are typically very good. (see A2Free)

Why would you need it?
If you have a telephone hooked up to the modem on your PC, you probably need some kind of protection from dialers.

What is a dialer?
According to Wikipedia: Dialers are necessary to connect to the internet (at least for non-broadband connections), but some dialers are designed to connect to premium-rate numbers. The providers of such dialers often search for security holes that may be present in the operating system installed on the user's computer and use them to change the computer to dial up through their number, pocketing the additional money for themselves. Alternatively, some dialers inform the user what it is that they are doing, with the promise of special content, accessible only via the special number. Examples of this content include software for download, (usually illegal) MP3s, 'underground' hacking materials such as viruses, and in the case of at least one website, pornography. read more

What does Anti-Dialer do?
Quote from Emsisoft: a-squared Anti-Dialer 2.0 provides protection from such programs. The integrated scanner searches all drives for Dialer programs and the Background Guard monitors the behavior of active programs for Dialer activity. The a-squared Anti-Dialer produces an alarm as soon as a program dials a connection or modifies the dial-up settings. The discovered Dialer should first be immediately placed in quarantine, since some Dialers manipulate the computer to such an extent that it no longer functions correctly when the Dialer is removed. Only then should the Dialer be removed. The user interface is child’s play to operate and has the same style as the other Emsi Software products.

Stick - add personal tabs to your desktop

review from Jack Alexander, July 2007, permalink Desktop Tools

Notes from Jack:

Hi Clif,

I think I have something for you. It's called "Stick" and it can be found here:

http://iwonderdesigns.com/?q=node/2

Of all of the 'stickies' and personal organisers that I've tried this one is unobtrusive, scans clean of spyware and virii and has many interesting functions.

The best is that when told to, it rolls up to the position you want. It offers a notepad, a mini-windows explorer and Internet Explorer (I don't use that function for security reasons, I just forbid the fire wall to give that part access to the internet), a calulator, a calendar, an RSS feed tab, and a navigator tab. I haven't tried it all out yet, but it seems to be a very fine program. I really like the roll-up feature. I don't like it when a program occupies space that I need and I really have a dislike for a program that starts with windows and takes over the screen. AM Notebook and another one I tried comes to mind (except I can't remember the name of the other organiser).

Regards...j

Raptor - save your eggs

review from TopFreeware, Jul 2007, permalink Games

From Tony at topfreeware.net:

A platform adventure game that requires strategy.

You are the chosen velociraptor dinosaur out of the pack that is on a mission to retreive 4 eggs that were stolen by marauding pterodactyls. Save the eggs before they become another animals meal.

Smite your enemies and work your way through some challenging puzzles along the way. Talk with other characters, hunt things to keep up your energy and play out the story through 25 smoothly animated levels, scattered with sound sequences and cut scenes.

This is quite a professional looking game with just the right amount of humor added. I'm thankful to the author for the save options as well, boy I needed them. Highly recommended.

(Also look out for the second installment which should be out soon)

I recently ran across this program. I haven't tried it but I thought you all might like to know about it. This program is similar to SandBoxie, GreenBorder and Altiris Software Virtualization Solution.

It is now free for home use.

Vista rumors unconfirmed after MS tries to plug leaks

Report from BillAllin, Jun 2007, permalink Windows Tips

From Clif:
This week, MS Mole remains silent. What evil lurks in the dark underground passages of Redmond? Only the Mole knows, and he holds his tongue for now ...

From Bill Allin:

MS Mole Report
by Bill Allin

Microsoft has muzzled all of its employees and associates with threats of dismissal or litigation for breach of security. Thus I have nothing to report from MS Mole.

I am unable to confirm the widely held rumour that Microsoft plans to end support for Vista as of the end of 2011, a mere five years after it hit the streets. Except for two versions of Vista (out of 47) that are specific business applications.

I cannot confirm that the first service pack for Vista, which will effectively be a system upgrade (as will all future service packs), is scheduled to be out in January of 2008.

I certainly can't tell you that Vista SP1 will work around the problem that so many people are facing with software that works on Vista being disabled or actually removed by Vista anywhere from hours to a few days after the next security update that Vista users get from MS.

I won't be able to tell you that Microsoft's anti-malware program(s) are under review since they no longer meet the standard they set for themselves of being the best in the field.

And I can't tell you anything about the new operating system that is in the works at MS.

Basically, I have nothing to report. But don't bet anything worthwhile against any of the rumours above.

Cheers
Bill Allin

1. I'm not sure what I did but my URL address under my tool bar no longer appears and I'm not sure how to get it back. If I want to type in an address I can't I have to do a search to find the site. It's really frustrating. I'm sure the answer is simple but I can't seem to figure out how to get that URL section back under my tool bar. I know it must be a dumb question, If you can help I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

2. I prefer to see the lists of subdirectories and files in "list" or "detail" format rather than as icons of some sort, which seems to be the default setting on my computer. I always have to go change the way the info is displayed. How can I get Windows XP to present the data listed as I would like to see it, in non-iconic format?

3. I'm using XP Pro (SP2). I've noticed that all of a sudden, and only recently too, the names of many of my files appear in blue text when I view them in Windows Explorer. Not all files are affected, and it seems that ANY file type can be affected. All the files open as normal and behave as normal so this blue text doesn't seem to have affected the file in any other ways, so it's more of a mystery than a problem (and it's beginning to annoy me now because I can't figure out what caused it). Any ideas about what may have caused this and how I can fix it?

6. I am new to XP down by the clock i have an arrow "show hidden icons" or "hide" how do i set this to show them all the time? and also coming from Windows ME I had another short cut section on the task bar next to the START button can i set this up on XP also? and if so how? Thank you so much

7. My friend's son has forgotten the password that he uses to get into his laptop running Windows XP. He was the sole user so I presume he must be the computer administrator. How do you get passed the bit that asks for a password when you don't know what the password is?
http://www.internetfixes.com/readers_questions/IF01635.htm

============================
8. My PC currently runs on Windows 98 so I would like to change the operating system to Windows XP but am no sure how to do it. Do I have to uninstall Windows 98 before I proceed with Windows XP? Or do I just reformat my PC with XP? I don't want to lose all my files in the process so will it help if I made backup copies and kept it in the 2nd partitioned drive?
http://www.internetfixes.com/readers_questions/IF01636.htm

============================
9. How do I restore the taskbar and desk top icons on XP that got delete/hid somewhere? Tried regedit/deleting the file. Even tried downloading some patches found on Ask Jeeves. Nothing worked but from searching this seems to be a common problem. I even tried to do a restore it won't let me go back but 4 days. When I boot on the folder with all icons showing comes up but not the desktop all that is on it is the wallpaper. Any ideas would be a big help.
http://www.internetfixes.com/readers_questions/IF01637.htm

============================
10. I note that after I conduct a search for a particular file or folder using the search companion - (XP Home SP2) all the files or folders with that name will appear in the search window. That's fine, but when I either use "Open Containing Folder" or just double click on that particular file (or folder) to open it, the search companion automatically creates a shortcut for that file or folder that appears at the bottom of the list. Is there some way to disable this behavior from happening so that a shortcut is not created?

GCAst - create your own podcast station

review from ClifNotes, Jun 2007, permalink Podcasting Tools

I don't recall how I found this website. I just noticed the link in my shortcut bar one day. I've always loved the idea of having a podcast, but I don't have time or the inclination to set one up. GCast has made it way too easy so now I have one you can listen to and subscribe to if you wish.

In five minutes, I had created a podcast station of my own. With GCast, I can call a telephone number from home and record a message into a podcast. I can also upload mp3 files. What more do I need to become a famous podcast star? I'd need interesting content and some talent. Since I have neither one, I guess this is just another cool toy for me. However, you might find that you have the skills and time to become famous. Now you can find out for yourself.

Quote from the website
Imagine having a radio with millions of channels, and being able to have your favorite channels automatically saved for future listening on your PC or iPod. Each channel could range from professionally-produced radio programs to short voice messages recorded by phone.

Imagine also the ability to create your own channel or audio journal and share it with the rest of the world! That's exactly what Gcast enables you to do, whether you're recording messages by phone, sharing music online, or creating entire audio productions.

Quote from the website
COOLSITES is a list of safe, fun, useful, informative and just plain cool websites and programs that are FREE, FREE and FREE. All of the programs and websites I list are free. If I list anything that is so good but isn't free I will list the price with it.

OTHER STUFF

Get Gmail! and Get Firefox!

You need a free 2.8 GB Gmail account to access many of the cool features at Google. After more than two years in beta testing Gmail is open to the public. Just go to http://gmail.com and sign up for an account.

I think Gmail works best in the awesome Firefox browser. It's free, easy to use, and it's way more secure than Internet Explorer. My favorite thing to do is to customize Firefox so that it does much more than IE ever could. You can select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.

Frapper - you people live all over the world!

Wow! Over 700 people and still growing! I invite all of you to record your locations on this map. You can include as little or as much information as you wish. I think you'll enjoy seeing yourself there.

Here's a small look at my frapper map.

Write your own review

I get many of the reviews in the newsletter from the readers. You don't have to be a genius or computer guru. Just answer a few questions and send me a review. I'll probably put you in the newsletter.

What do you have to say?

Just tell me what article you are talking about and leave me your comment.

Have fun and surf safely.
