If the files on your PC are important to you, you should figure out a way to back up those files somehow. There are many ways to do this and lots of free backup utilities. I'm not very good at making sure my files are safe but I do occasionally back up my system with an old payware disk imager. I was lucky enough to get a free copy of Acronis TrueImage.
I've seen listings for DriveImage XML before, but I've never tried it. My friend Tony has it listed on his site so you can bet that it's a great free backup solution.

Quote from Top Freeware:
Perform full backup images of your logical drives or partitions.
Features include copying directly from drive to drive, scheduling automatic backups with your task scheduler, restoring images to the existing drive or another drive and more. It uses (VSS) Microsoft's Volume Shadow Services and the images are stored in .dat and .xml files, which allows you to use third party tools to process them with. You can also use this as a plugin with BOOT CD's, which is very handy
