What would you do if you had to rename thousands of MP3 files that all had stupid 4 letter names? I had a chance to find that out this week.
While at work a few weeks ago, I borrowed Jeff's iPod to see if I could get some of his music for our annual Regatta party. I hooked it up using the USB cable that was with it and when I attached it to my PC, I was able to see the iPod hard drive just like it was a regular USB thumb drive. I selected everything on the iPod and copied it to my backup drive. Then I safely returned Jeff's music machine to his bench and went back to work.
The next free period I had, I looked into what it was that I'd copied over. What a freaky mess! There were dozens of folders that included hundreds of MP3 files that were all named with only 4 letters each. Maybe that's the standard format for the Apple players, but I had no idea what each song was.
I grabbed about 650mb of these and dropped them onto a handy thumb drive and took them home. After a short while searching at my favorite download site, I hoped I had found the solution to my naming problem.
ID3 renamer came to my rescue. It was so simple to install and run. I fired it up, selected the thumb drive and clicked the GO button. In about 3 seconds, it renamed most of the MP3s using the embedded ID3 tag information. There were about 10 files that didn't have good tags, so I had to rename those manually. That's not bad considering that I had 127 files in this first batch.
Thumbs up on this tool. The only problem I had was believing how fast it renamed the files.
PS: I'm definitely an audio newby. Tell me if you have a better solution.
